I recently reread "A Glorious Way to Die: The Kamikaze Mission of the Battleship Yamato" and from the time the first American planes started their approach to the time Yamato rolled over and exploded was a little less than two hours, maybe an hour and fifty one minutes. After the first wave finished their attack the officers and crew of Yamato had perhaps a three or four minute break before the second wave started their run in and there was no gap between the end of the second wave and the start of the third and final wave. I must have been grueling to suffer attacks that lasted that long. There were 386 planes all told; though two planes flown by flight officers coordinating two of the three attack waves did not attack themselves as they were ordered not to. The officer in charge of coordinating either the second or third wave said, "screw that" and had his plane loaded with two 500llb bombs and did make an attack run. So, 384 planes made attack runs. One hundred and eighty of those planes were fighters; mostly Hellcats but also some Corsairs, and all of the fighters were carrying bomb loads, mostly two 500 pounders.

Yamamoto advised against building Yamato and Musashi and putting the resources into aircraft carriers. That didn't happen.

The Avenger was a glide bomber when loaded with bombs, not a dive bomber. That approach made it very susceptible to AA fire. I lost an uncle in the Pacific that way.
